Abortion in Bangladesh

According to the penal code 1860, abortion is illegal in Bangladesh in most of the situations unless the pregnant woman’s life is in ultimate danger. Due to illegal abortion can be punished by fine and/or imprisonment. However, every year estimated 1,194000 abortion is being done in Bangladesh including unethical pregnancy. According to the religious customs, extramarital pregnancy is not social accepted matter in Bangladesh. Due to western culture and lifestyle a mentionable number of women get pregnant in unsafe unconscious physical relation.  In that case, due to social and religious barrier, most of them go through the abortion process by taking pill or with untrained provider. Due to lack of awareness and financial stability woman goes to the untrained cheap provider and make their life vulnerable to danger. 

 

Although, abortion is illegal in Bangladesh, there are lot of abortion control pill available over the counter by dint of family planning. The government encourage one or two children per family. That’s why the abortion pill in available in the local pharmacy which costs 50-100 BDT.
