Decline of Birds: Reasons and actions

Every day different species of birds is becoming extinct around us. In the last half century, 2.9 billion birds have become extinct in the United States and Canada alone. However, in some ecosystems the number of birds has decreased faster than in other ecosystems, such as the number of birds in the forest has decreased by one billion since 1980 alone. Decreased from grassland to 720 million. Insect-eating birds have decreased by 160 million. The number of coastal birds has dropped by about one-third. In addition, 14 percent of the birds that migrate to the tropics during the winter do not return. Although many birds are born each year it is less than the number of extinct birds. Although there are such statistics in countries like USA and Canada, there are no accurate statistics and research in Bangladesh. However, the Asiatic Society's "Encyclopaedia of Plants and Animals" mentions that about thirty species of birds have become extinct in Bangladesh. And there is no research on how many endangered species are becoming extinct each year.

The main reason for the decline of birds is the loss or destruction of bird habitat. One of the reasons for the decline in the number of birds is the conversion of forest lands, grasslands and bird habitats into agricultural lands.

The reason for the decline of birds

Although experts have not been able to find the real cause of the decline in birds in a scientific way, they have speculated that the decline or loss of bird habitat is the main reason for the decline. One of the reasons for the decline in the number of birds is the conversion of forest lands, grasslands and bird habitats into agricultural lands. In many cases, although the habitat change does not directly damage the bird habitat, it does affect the bird's life cycle. Inadequate water and water pollution often hinder the survival and reproduction of birds. Climate change and environmental pollution from pesticides and other toxins are also hampering the survival and reproduction of birds. A significant number of birds died after being hit by glass walls, windmills and other installations. As a result, the number of birds is decreasing day by day.

What to do to increase the number of birds

It is important to take various steps at the individual and government level to prevent the rapid decline in the number of birds. Our concerted efforts can save birds from becoming extinct and endangered. As a result, ecology and environment will be protected. The world will become beautiful.

1. Bird-friendly glass installation

Bird-friendly glass installations can reduce bird mortality. In addition, in a room with a wide glass wall, curtains can be made to block the light at night. As a result, the bird will not run away and die in confusion.

2. Planting of native species of trees

Adequate number of native species of trees can be planted without leaving the backyard empty. In this way the birds will get back to their habitat. Many times, we plant exotic species of trees that destroy the habitat of birds. Birds do not sit on those trees or build nests. Bird nests can also be hung artificially on trees.

3. Reduce the use of pesticides

Due to the use of pesticides in agricultural lands, many birds die every year and become infertile and unable to reproduce. So, by increasing the use of organic pesticides we can bring back a healthy environment for birds.

4. Reduce the use of plastic

Lots of birds die every year as a result of plastic pollution. By reducing the use of plastic in our daily lives or by using reusable plastics, it is possible to reduce the unwanted death of birds.
